Types of Glimmers in Mental Health

Healing does not always arrive in breakthroughs. It shows up in small moments that bring a sense of safety, comfort, or ease. These moments are known as glimmers. They are subtle experiences that help regulate emotions and ground the nervous system.

Learn more about glimmers here.

Below are five types of glimmers you can begin noticing in everyday life.

1. Auditory Glimmers (Sound)

Auditory glimmers come from comforting sounds. This might be the tone of a loved one’s voice, shared laughter, a favorite song, or sounds from nature like rain or birdsong. Sound is closely connected to emotion and memory. This makes auditory glimmers extremely powerful for calming the mind and body.

2. Visual Glimmers (Sight)

Visual glimmers are things you can see that bring peace and joy. Some examples of this include seeing sunlight, a beautiful sunset, or something that is familiar to you in your environment.

3. Tactile Glimmers (Touch)

Touch-based glimmers help the body feel grounded. Examples include wrapping up in a soft blanket, holding a warm mug, petting an animal, or feeling the texture of a favorite piece of clothing. Tactile glimmers can be especially helpful during moments of stress or overwhelm.

4. Olfactory Glimmers (Smell)

Smell is deeply tied to memory and emotion. Olfactory glimmers might include the scent of coffee, fresh laundry, rain, or a familiar perfume. Even brief moments of noticing a comforting scent can create a sense of calm and presence.

5. Relational Glimmers (Connection)

Relational glimmers come from connection. Shared laughs, making eye contact, or simply being listened to can bring a sense of safety and belonging. These glimmers remind us that we are not alone.

Why Glimmers Matter

Glimmers matter. They help the brain recognize what is safe, positive, and grounding. For someone managing anxiety, depression, or trauma, the brain’s focus often stays on threats or negative experiences. Glimmers interrupt this pattern. Glimmers create brief windows where the mind and body can pause, breathe, and feel a sense of calm or joy.

At ShareWell, we believe healing grows through these meaningful moments. By noticing and sharing glimmers, especially in connection with others, small sparks of hope can slowly light the way forward.
