At ShareWell, creating a safe, supportive space begins with one small but powerful action: showing up with your camera on.
It might seem like a small detail, but in our peer-led spaces, being visibly present helps build trust, connection, and emotional safety—everything that makes ShareWell different from other online spaces. When we can see each other, we feel more seen, more heard, and more supported.
As a peer, your role in upholding this rule helps set the tone for the entire group.
Why Is the Camera Rule So Important?
Turning on your camera isn’t just about following the rules—it’s about showing up, being present, and allowing others to do the same. When everyone’s face is visible, it creates a sense of mutual respect, accountability, and shared intention. It says: “I’m here with you.”
On the flip side, when someone’s camera is off—or they appear distracted or disengaged—it can shift the energy in the group. It may even make others feel less safe to share openly.
That’s why the camera rule isn’t optional. It’s an essential part of the ShareWell experience.
Tip of the Week: How to Gently Enforce the Camera Rule
If you notice someone in your group with their camera off, pointed away, or otherwise distracted, here are a few gentle prompts you can use:
1. If their camera is off:
“Hi [Name], just a quick reminder—ShareWell has a community rule that everyone keeps their camera on during groups. Could you please turn yours on so we can all feel connected?”
2. If the camera is on but not showing their face:
“Hi [Name], thanks for being here! Can you adjust your camera so your face is clearly visible? It helps us build a sense of safety and trust in the space.”
3. If they’re visibly distracted or multitasking:
“Hi [Name], it looks like you’re a bit distracted. At ShareWell, we ask everyone to be fully present during groups so the space feels supportive for everyone. If now’s not the best time, you’re welcome to rejoin a group when you can give it your full attention.”
What to Do If Someone Refuses or Can’t Comply
If someone isn’t able—or chooses not—to follow the camera rule:
- Offer a gentle reminder. You can reference the rule they agreed to when the group began.
- Give them space to explain. If it’s a tech issue, encourage them to reach out to support@sharewellnow.com.
- Remove them if needed. If someone continues to ignore the guideline, it’s okay to remove them from the group. One person not being fully present can affect the whole group’s experience—and your job as a peer is to protect that space.
Holding Space with Trust and Care
As a community member, you’re doing more than holding space for a conversation. You’re shaping the energy of the room. You’re helping people feel safe to open up, reflect, and connect. And that starts with presence—both yours and theirs.
“We create safety by holding space with trust and accountability.”
Thank you for helping set the tone, hold the boundary, and model what a supportive community can look like. You’re helping make ShareWell a space where people can show up as their whole selves—and that matters.
